How Do Computers Work?
That’s one of the most frequently asked questions, and yet it’s such a broad topic that it can be hard to get your head around. To help you out, I’ve written this short summary of some of the major components of your computer and how they operate to let you easily comprehend the inner workings of the machine on your desk.
CPU vs GPU
When deciding whether you want a desktop or laptop computer, there are two main hardware features to consider: central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU). CPUs and GPUs perform different functions but play an important role in how fast your computer is. You can think of your CPU as a brain that processes information, while GPUs act as your computer’s muscle. The faster they’re both working, usually determined by their clock speed—the higher-end each is—the better your computer will run when performing tasks like gaming, video editing and graphic design.
Know Your RAM
Random-access memory (RAM) is a type of computer storage that holds data temporarily. Every time you open a program or document, your computer loads it into RAM. When you’re done using that file, it’ll automatically be saved back to your hard drive and closed in RAM, making room for other programs and documents you might open later. The more RAM your computer has, the better. If your PC doesn’t have enough RAM to store temporary files like web pages, applications or documents while they’re opened, it will slow down considerably while trying to juggle everything in its limited space—thereby slowing down everything else you do as well.
Computer Memory – DDR2, DDR3, and DDR4
When you first start to learn about computers, it can seem like a daunting task. There are so many components that all work together in order for your computer to function properly. One of these crucial parts is memory, and we’re going to take a look at it today, specifically DDR2, DDR3, and DDR4. These different versions of memory are what help your computer run programs as fast as possible. When shopping for new hardware, especially RAM, you need to make sure that you know what type of memory it uses before buying! Otherwise you could end up with something incompatible or insufficiently powerful! Here’s a short guide on how each version of DDR works . Let’s get started!
What is DDR2?
DDR2 stands for Double Data Rate 2. It’s a type of RAM that was developed by JEDEC and released in 2003. It’s considered to be an improvement over its predecessor, DDR1, as it allows for twice as much data transfer per clock cycle (DDR1: 2.5GB/s, DDR2: 5GB/s). This means that computers using DDR2 memory can access data faster than those with only DDR1 installed.
What is DDR3?
If you’re building a gaming computer, you definitely want to make sure that it has DDR3 memory. This type of RAM was developed by JEDEC in 2007, and it uses newer standards for data transfer. These are called Double Data Rate 3 and Quad Data Rate 3.
What is DDR4?
DDR4 was developed by JEDEC in 2011, and it is even faster than DDR3. This type of RAM uses Quad Data Rate 4, which means that it can transfer data at up to 16GB/s. In comparison, DDR3 only allows for 8GB/s of data transfer! The best part about DDR4 is that it’s backwards compatible with all previous versions of memory, so you can still use your computer without any trouble if you have older hardware.
What is DDR5?
DDR5 use Quad Data Rate 5, which means that transfers data at up to 32GB/s. This makes it even faster than DDR4!
As you can see, RAM has come a long way since its creation. If you want your computer to run as fast as possible, you need to make sure that it has adequate memory.
What Is A Computer Motherboard?
The motherboard is to a computer what your skeleton is to your body. In fact, you could think of a computer as being very similar to a human body in that it consists of many different parts all working together as one system. The difference here is that each piece (each component) in a computer system has its own job—to carry out one specific function—while on our bodies, each part works in conjunction with every other part to keep us alive and functioning. So while we have bones, organs, muscles, etc., computers only need input devices (keyboards and mice), output devices (monitor and speakers), storage (hard drives), memory chips, microprocessors…and motherboards.
A Processor’s Importance
A computer is composed of many different components, but there are really only two main parts—the central processing unit (CPU) and random access memory (RAM). The CPU handles every task performed by your computer. If you turn on your computer without RAM, it won’t be able to function. The same goes for RAM without a CPU.
What does a processor do? Every action or input that you perform via your keyboard or mouse is carried out by the processor. You can use a processor to run programs, edit photos and videos, store important documents and spreadsheets, etc. How can processors speed up my computer?
How Does A Hard Drive Work
Hard drives come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. But all of them consist of a round platter covered with some type of read/write head. The heads float just above (or below) the platter and use a magnetic field to read and write data. This process is known as magnetic storage, because information is stored magnetically on both sides of every piece of media that’s ever been created; whether it’s on your hard drive or on an old cassette tape, you can count on data being stored magnetically.
Nowadays, we have SSDs. SSDs are Solid State Drives. They use NAND flash memory to store data instead of magnetic platters. They’re much faster than traditional hard drives, but they’re also more expensive and less durable.
The Science Behind USB Ports
USB ports let you easily transfer files between your computer and external storage devices. USB stands for Universal Serial Bus, and it’s a standard that allows multiple devices to communicate through a single cable. While all USB ports seem pretty much identical, there are some differences under the hood: high-power and low-power versions; versions 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, etc.; and Type A, B, C and more (Micro-USB to be specific).
Each USB port includes four pins connected to an IC chip inside your computer or other device that interpret incoming information from connected devices. The port only makes data transfers possible after communicating with any attached device and ensuring compatibility, in terms of both hardware and software. The standard works so well because each IC chip is programmed so that it understands one of three different types of commands sent over different pairs of pins within each USB port. This is called plug-n-play technology: You can simply plug a new device into a port without having to make any adjustments or change any settings on either device itself before you begin transferring files.
The Mind Blowing Number Of Cables In A PC
The typical personal computer (PC) has about 1,000 cables and connects to over a hundred different components. The more complex a computer, the more things that can go wrong with it. If you’re buying a new PC, make sure you understand what’s under its hood before you buy.
PSUs, Fans And Cooling Pads Make All The Difference
The biggest and most important difference between a desktop and a laptop is obviously its size. Desktop computers take up much more space, but they have far more space to work with inside. Desktop cases usually have anywhere from three to six expansion slots on their motherboard as well as room for multiple drives, multiple fans and larger video cards. If you’re trying to decide between a laptop or desktop computer, it all comes down to what kind of hardware you need.
A Quick Note On Software And Programs That Run The Computer
Software, in its simplest terms, is a list of instructions for a computer to follow. When you tell your computer to open Microsoft Word and write something, you are providing it with an instruction in software form.
But how do computers understand these software instructions? How do they know how to use Word or Excel or Angry Birds? This is where programs come into play. Programs are collections of software that perform specific tasks—like managing files on your computer or translating words on a web page into another language. It’s possible to have multiple programs working together at once as well, which often happens with modern operating systems like macOS and Windows 10.
