Sewing can be really fun and rewarding, but it can also be pretty frustrating sometimes. Here are some common sewing mistakes you might make and how to avoid them in the future.
Presser Foot
Just about any machine comes with a free-moving presser foot, which is what you need for most sewing jobs. Use it for sewing and attaching buttons, but not for gathering fabric or anything else that requires movement of only one side of your presser foot. For those tasks, use an alternative type of foot. Presser feet are available in different widths and depths to accommodate different fabric thicknesses and machine models.
Measuring Tape
Measure twice, cut once. This can be applied to almost anything you’re sewing and will help avoid any costly mistakes. Take care to always use a measuring tape that has inches and centimeters on it so you can measure in both U.S. and metric units, depending on what your pattern specifies.
Seam Ripper
I recommend keeping a seam ripper in your sewing kit at all times. This can be useful for fixing mistakes, but I use it most often to remove and re-stitch a seam when I’ve sewn too far past an end or skipped ahead on marking my fabric with chalk. The seam ripper is perfect for when you realize you should have turned that corner another three inches back.
Scissors
If you don’t have a high-quality pair of scissors, chances are that you struggle with your cutting technique. Get some good shears and practice, practice, practice! If you find yourself getting frustrated with your sewing, try switching to smaller, more precise cuts. By doing so, you will become better at cutting small shapes and can then progress to bigger shapes once you get better at precision. Cutting fabric is similar to practicing scales on piano – work on your fundamentals until they are smooth and effortless.
Sewing Machine Needles
There are four basic needle types for most home sewing machines, and each serves a unique purpose. For example, universal needles are best for sewing with wovens; quilting needles (which feature an angled throat) create easy-to-sew stitches through multiple layers of fabric; embroidery needles create decorative and embellished stitches.
